Biotin 5000 (Jarrow) Each bottle, 100 capsules. Each capsule, 5,000 mcg. No toxicities have been seen in people using up to 10 mg a day (that would be taking 2 capsules a day). Biotin is important for gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis, and is essential for healthy hair, skin and muscle tissue.
Lark Lands reports that some suggest the possibility of a daily intake of 10-15 mg (that's 1-2 caps per day) for those with neuropathy. Choline and inositol are also critically important parts of this (see below). People in treatment for diabetic neuropathy had received 10 mg intramuscularly daily for six weeks, followed by 10 mg injections 3 times a week for 6 weeks and 5 mg orally daily for up to two years. Also great for hair health. Suggested use is one cap daily with meals.
This is a water-soluble B-vitamin that the body can synthesize in the intestines (as long as they are working well and/or you aren't on antibiotics). The body uses biotin as a cofactor with certain proteins, folic acid, B12 and pantothenic acid (these things work together!) Frank deficiency manifests as baldness, dry, flaky skin and rash around the nose and mouth. Supplementation in those with frank deficiency can help restore hair loss, but will not likely help those who aren't deficient. However, it does seem to help kids with lots of cowlicks to get some manageability out of their hair! The RDA is 300 mcg per day, which should more than augment any milder deficiency arising from intestinal malfunction. Biotin and other B-vitamins have been shown to be deficient in people with inflammatory bowel disease. Three people with severe diabetic neuropathy saw great improvement over a year's use at 10 mg/day (10,000 mcg which is over 300 times the RDA) in an intramuscular injection. (Perhaps this might help those suffering from HAART-related neuropathies or 3TC/lamivudine/Epivir-related hair problems?)
From Jarrow:
Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin typically found in liver, egg yolk, cereals, legumes and nuts. In the body, biotin is found in low concentrations in the brain, liver and muscle tissue. Biotin is essential for normal skin and hair growth, lipid metabolism and energy production (ATP). Alcohol consumption decreases biotin status in the body.*
Keep out of the reach of children.

A clinical study, described below.
Northern Illinois research fellow Theresa M. Schultz, R.D., L.D.N., announced today a call for research subjects in her current type II diabetes study. In the study, Ms. Schultz will examine the effects of R-alpha lipoic acid on HbA1c, lipid levels, and blood pressure in type 2 diabetics. R-alpha lipoic acid, used in conjunction with biotin, is believed to have an active role in balancing insulin production with glucose uptake. Imbalances, often severe, are a result of adult-onset or type II diabetes. "Lipoic supplements have been studied and prescribed in Europe for over 20 years, but little has been done in the United States," said Ms. Schultz. "In our study we hope to recruit people actively suffering from type II diabetes and monitor their A1C, cholesterol, and blood pressure, to a carefully balancing supplement."
Glucorell, Inc., a Florida-based natural supplement manufacturer, will provide the same material used for use in the trial that is used in Insulow.
Created specifically for diabetics and those at risk of diabetes, Insulow addresses the root cause of diabetes - insulin resistance, helping to increase insulin production and improve glucose uptake according to company officials.
Similar to the familiar marriage of vitamin D and calcium, the two active ingredients in Insulow, R-lipoic acid and biotin, work in harmony to ensure a proper balance between insulin production and glucose uptake. Insulow has no known adverse side effects and can even reduce fat gain associated with a variety of diabetes medications. "Not all lipoic acid supplements are the same," said Larry Berube, president of Glucorell. "Insulow's formula is based on more than two decades of research and more than a dozen clinical studies in Europe."
In these European trials, many patients experienced significant improvements in balancing blood sugar levels, often to the point of eliminating the need for other diabetes medications.
Subject Criteria
Volunteers for the study must be type II diabetics age 21 to 65 years of age, non-smokers in otherwise good health. They must be willing to participate in a double-blind test of dietary supplement medication or placebo. Participants will not be required to nor are they encouraged to abandon their current diabetic medication and dietary regime. For further information on participation, volunteers should call 630-365-2814 or email Tschultz@niu.edu. About Glucorell Inc.
